To holiday in Iceland is to holiday in a land of ice and fire. A winter holiday there is one bearing witness to rugged beauty, thundering waterfalls and almost surreal geological turmoil across and under its surface. Europe's northernmost outpost is a wild and romantic place with narrow fjords; deep ravines; vast glaciers with jumbles of moraine; black sand deserts; dormant volcanoes and spluttering geysers.

Iceland lies like some vast aircraft carrier tethered in the middle of the Atlantic just south of the Arctic Circle, with most of the population living in or around Reykjavík and the rest scattered along the coastal fringes in farming hamlets and fishing villages. For geology students, amateur or professional, the island is like an interactive encyclopaedia: bubbling here, cracking open there, frozen solid in places and with water cascading everywhere. The vast interior is uninhabited and uninhabitable and despite some forest clearances a few centuries back must look pretty much as it would have done a 1000 or more ago.
