HOLIDAYS IN LAPLAND

To holiday in Lapland is to holiday in the one last great wilderness area of Europe. More properly (and diplomatically) called Sapmi, the ancestral lands of the Sami stretch from Tromso on the west coast of Norway in an arc across the top of Northern Europe to Russia's Kola Peninsula bordering the Barent's Sea. Its unity is cultural and linguistic rather than political or geological. The landscapes of the tundra north of Alta being as different to those of the forested fells around Jukkasjarvi as are the Inari Sami to the Ume.

In winter we have variants to our Ice Hotel Holidays including a Super Classic weekend and stays there combined with whale watching or husky mushing. By Lake Inari we've found the lovely village of Nellim and the equally lovely Lappaleinen family, whose wilderness hotel provides a special base from which to snowmobile; whilst to the north we have an adventurous stay at the Kirkenes Snow Hotel featuring amongst other things a King Crab Safari. And of course, wherever you travel your proximity to the magnetic pole brings you an unrivalled chance of seeing the Northern Lights.
