Reflecting its past as a multi-ethnic city today’s Vilnius is a melting pot of cultures and races. The Old Town lies at the confluence of two rivers, studded with the domes of Orthodox churches competing with the towers of Catholic ones and since 1991, there has been a renaissance in the city with new cafés, bars and restaurants appearing almost weekly.

Best explored on foot (much of the Old Town is pedestrianised anyway) the medieval parts of the city are more than just a museum, with a university campus, residential housing and a plethora of places to eat and drink.

Outside of Vilnius and worth an afternoon (especially if the weather is good) stands the painstakingly restored Trakai Castle set in a mass of lakes – the town is literally built on water.
