Unravel Iceland’s Norsk past whilst enjoying its scenic present with stops at country museums, travelling around the north west and through the uninhabited highlands stopping off to marvel at waterfalls, glaciers and hot springs. The Snæfellsnes glacier; Lake Myvatn, Godafoss, Gullfoss waterfalls and Geysir are just some of this tour’s highlights.
DAY 1 UK – REYKJAVÍK Scheduled Icelandair flight to Reykjavík. Transfer on arrival to and overnight at Borgartún Guesthouse.
DAY 2 REYKJAVÍK – BORGARFJÖRDUR Meet your guide and head out to the Pingvellir National Park before going to Borgarfjörur and Hraunfossar, the waterfall that trickles out from under a lava field. Highlights: Viking Parliament: Hraunfossar. Overnight in the Borgarfjördur area for two nights.
DAY 3 SNÆFELLSNES EXCURSION Explore the multi-hued spine of Snæfellsnes Peninsula, walk among the tortuous rock formations at Arnarstapi and try a little shark meat. Highlights: Snæfellsnes Peninsula: Dritvík:Turf house museum Hellisandur: Shark farm at Bjarnarhöfn: Stykkishólmur.
DAY 4 BORGARFJÖRDUR – EYJAFJÖRDUR Highlights: Eric the Red’s replica farm house: Icelandic horse show at Skagafjörur: Akureyri. Overnight in the Eyjafjörur area for two nights.
DAY 5 LAKE MYVATN EXCURSION Highlights: Goafoss: Lake Myvatn: Krafla: Námaskar: Dimmuborgir.
DAY 6 EYJAFJÖRDUR – THE SOUTH Drive down the Kjolur highland route between Langjökull and Hofjökull glaciers to Hveravellir hot springs. Highlights: Glaumbær Turf Farm/Folk Museum: Hveravellir: Gullfoss: Geysir. Overnight in the Southwest for two nights.
DAY 7 SOUTH COAST AND SKAFTAFELL NATIONAL PARK Drive along to Iceland’s only coastal village without a harbour (!) and then cross the vast outwash plains of Skeiarársandur. Highlights of the day: Vatnajökull: Skaftafell National Park.
DAY 8 THE SOUTH – REYKJAVÍK Highlights: Skálholt Cathedral: Stokkeseyri: Eyrarbakki: Hveragerdi. Overnight at Borgartún Guesthouse.
DAY 9 REYKJAVÍK – UK Transfer to airport. Scheduled Icelandair flight to UK.
