Follow the highland trail Sprengisandur through the vastness of Iceland's interior to Lake Myvatn and then down along the fjorded eastern coast, skirting Vatnajokull as you go. Go whale spotting; get up on to Vatnajokull and walk the walk in Skaftafell for a journey worthy of a Michael Palin documentary. DAY 1 UK – REYKJAVÍK Scheduled Icelandair flight to Reykjavík. Transfer on arrival to and overnight at Hótel Leifur Eiriksson.
DAY 2 REYKJAVÍK – FLÚIR Meet your guide and travel east to ingvellir National Park, the dramatically fissured plain where the great rift at Almannagja forms the Óxará river’s watercourse feeding into ingvalavatn. Highlights: Nesjavellir: Lake ingvallavatn: Viking Parliament: Gullfoss: Geysir: Accommodation in Flúir area for 2 nights.
DAY 3 ÓRSMÖRK EXCURSION A day in the Woods of Thor created by glacial streams running off the adjacent ice cap and now lined with dwarf willow and carpeted with saxifrage and daisies. Highlights: Seljalandsfoss: Eyjafjallajökull.
DAY 4 FLÚIR – MVATN Drive the Sprengisandur route across the pass between Tungnasfellsjökull and Hofsjökull and up through terrain that is the closest Europe has to a desert. Highlights: Ódáahraun: Bárardalur Valley. Accommodation in Mvatn area for 3 nights.
DAY 5 WATERFALLS, CANYONS AND WHALE SPOTTING EXCURSION Highlights: Dettifoss: Jökulsárgljúfur: Ásbyrgi: Included activity: whale spotting tour.
DAY 6 MVATN EXCURSION Highlight: Lake Mvatn and its surrounding lava fields, volcanoes and mountains.
DAY 7 MVATN – EGILSSTAIR Across the open stretches of barren, stark highland plain occasionally dotted with melt water lakes and streams slipping into gravel beds, to the head of the Berufjörur. Highlights: Vopnafjörur: Selá River: Burstafell Farm: Hellisheii. Included activity: visit to Selá swimming pool. Accommodation in Djúpivogur area.
DAY 8 EGILSSTAIR – DJÚPIVOGUR Stop of the day will be the Jökulsárlon lagoon crammed with icebergs calved from the glacier from which it was formed. The variety of shapes derive from the age of the bergs. Highlights: Almannaskar: Vatnajökull: Jökulsárlón: Skaftafell National Park. Accommodation in Kirkjubæjarklaustur area for 2 nights.
DAY 9 KIRKJUBÆJARKLAUSTUR EXCURSION Highlights: Kirkjubæjarklaustur: Laki: Eldhraun.
DAY 10 KIRKJUBÆJARKLAUSTUR – REYKJAVÍK Through the exquisitely coloured landscape of Landmannalaugar with its multi hued rhyolite peaks, meandering lava flows, streams and balmy lakes. Highlights: Fallabakslei: Activity option: bathing in a natural pool. Overnight at Hótel Leifur Eiriksson.
DAY 11 REYKJAVÍK – UK Morning at leisure.Transfer to Keflavík Airport. Scheduled Icelandair flights to UK.
