HOLIDAYS TO ICELAND THE SCENIC SOUTH
Soak up Southern Iceland’s unique cocktail of sights: the falling water curtains that are Skógarfoss and Seljalandsfoss; the rock stacks at Reynisdrauger; Vestmannaeyjar where parts of the ground are still warm from the last volcanic eruption there; Thor’s Wood where you can gently hike or vigorously white water raft and the Golden Circle’s trio of spectaculars. And afterwards, contrast with a few days of Reykjavík’s urban cool atmosphere. HÓTEL RANGÁ Built in log cabin style but with 4 star hotel luxury, the Rangá has just 27 rooms and is a perfect jumping off point for South Iceland’s major scenic attractions. The hotel has its own outdoor hotpots, a lounge bar and a restaurant with a signature ‘Surf and Turf’ dish made with Icelandic lamb and lobster. WHAT TO SEE SKÓGARFOSS AND SELJALANDSFOSS. Seljalandsfoss spills straight off the fell side dropping into a shallow pool behind which run pathways which magnify the water’s sound. Skógarfoss similarly drops straight down into the pool below in front of which you can stand on the gravel river bed watching your surrounding world disappear in white mist. PÓRSMÖRK. Thor’s wood with its dwarf willow and birch is a haven in summer for everybody, from hikers to city partygoers looking to recover from the night before in pastoral surrounds. Whether you want eco or action órsmörk is the place to be with everything from marked hiking trails to white water rafting adventures, although the latter need to be booked in advance. THE GOLDEN CIRCLE. A tourist board slogan of course but, despite that, an unmissable trio of sights that are a ‘must do’ for every Iceland visitor. The double fall at Gullfoss and its turn through 90º makes it unique; the eponymous Geysir area gave the world the name and Strokkur although a little arthritic still spouts impressively. Last but not least Pingvellier where the early Vikings gave up rape and pillage in favour of parliamentary democracy.
DAY 1: UK – REYKJAVÍK Scheduled Icelandair flight to Reykjavík. Collect hire car at the airport and drive to and overnight at Hotel Ranga for three nights.
