HOLIDAYS TO NORWAY

ACROSS THE ROOF OF NORWAY
5-7 days from £600 pp

The Bergensbanen is one of the great rail journeys of the world: the highest line in Europe it climbs up to 4000 feet across the barren, snow flecked Hardangervidda mountain plateau before descending through lush valleys to the coast. You can enjoy it in a single day; stop off in the mountains or take the Flam mountain spur down to the Sognefjord.

For many years this tour has been our most popular to Norway, especially for the first time visitor; combining Oslo with Bergen by travelling along the spectacular rail route that literally crosses the roof of Norway. As well as our 5-day option arrangement, 7-day variations allow you to enjoy either a stay in the mountains or a magical fjord-side retreat.

Oslo, the oldest Nordic capital, is set at the head of the Oslofjord and steeped in its Viking heritage. A compact city, with most of its museums, shops, theatres and restaurants within walking distance of each other, it has a uniquely restful and cosmopolitan atmosphere. The extraordinary Vigeland Sculpture Park is a must.

Voss is a smallish town in the mountains at one end of Lake Vangsvatnet (the Park Hotel’s grounds lead down to it) about 90 minutes from Bergen. The Hangur cable car takes you up into the mountains proper for some walking and rarified air or you can cruise on narrow fjords as part of the ‘Norway in a Nutshell’ excursion.

Balestrand Nestling on a promontory the little village of Balestrand is something of a Norwegian icon with its backdrop of snow capped mountains and sweeping fjord. Both the Kviknes and the Midtnes Pension have been in the same hands for years. A trip to the Fjaerland glacier is a must.

Bergen Situated in the heart of Fjord Norway, this charming Hanseatic harbour town sits in the embrace of its seven mountains, latticed by fjords. Bryggen, the medieval quayside and Troldhaugen are probably its best known attractions. The view from the top of Mount Fløyen is truly breathtaking.
