A WEEKEND IN SKAGEN

Enjoy a special gourmet weekend in one of Denmark’s finest hotels set at the tip of the Skaw, the promontory that marks the country’s northernmost point; enjoy some of the finest fish you’ll ever eat and savour the very special atmosphere that the summer light creates here and take in the straw white dunes and pale green heaths that make this such a romantic spot.

Bathed in the refracted luminous light that attracted a colony of artists here in the 19th century, Skagen juts out in the confluence of the Kattegat and Skagerrak and is characterized by landscapes of once migratory sand dunes, wind brushed heathes and seascapes dotted with white horses. In a few parts of the town there are still some of the straw yellow houses with their red fluted tile roofs that were once commonplace and the Skagen Museum showcases some of the eponymous group of artist’s work, evocatively capturing the daily lives of fisherman and the play of light on the beaches.

As you might expect fish is the big thing here and down by the harbour there is the Skagen Fiskerestaurant which has food to die for and also Jolheuset with outdoor seating. Easy to meander through Skagen is a long sliver of town dissected by its main street running more of less parallel with the beach.

RUTH’S HOTEL

With just 26 rooms painstakingly rebuilt in sympathy with its original, Ruth’s stands outside of Skagen in the dunes and aims to offer its guests a brief respite from the modern world. Each room is individually furnished and comes with a terrace overlooking the Kattegat. The chef here cut his teeth in Falsled Kro one of the best restaurants outside Copenhagen.

DAY 1 UK – AALBORG Scheduled Sterling flight to Aalborg. Self transfer to Helman Phoenix for overnight.
DAY 2 AALBORG – SKAGEN Collect hire car and take the road out to the Kattegat coast and follow it up to Skagen. Overnight for 2 nights at Ruth’s Hotel
DAY 3 SKAGEN Day at leisure
DAY 4 SKAGEN - UK Morning and afternoon at leisure before return to the UK (a good way to round off your trip is to take the road down through Hjonning to Aalborg).
