Two of the best locations for whale spotting are featured in this itinerary as you follow a route out along the dramatically stark Snafellsnes Peninsula, round through horse country to the northern curtain block waterfalls of Goaffoss & Selfoss, and Europe’s most powerful plunge waterfall Dettifoss.
DAY 1 UK- REYKJAVÍK Scheduled Icelandair flight to Reykjavík. Transfer on arrival to and overnight at Hótel Leifur Eiríksson for 2 nights.
DAY 2 REYKJAVÍK Day free for excursions. City & Hafnafjörður: Blue Lagoon: Gullfoss: Geysir: Þingvellir National Park.
DAY 3 THE SOUTHWEST AND SNÆFELLSNES PENINSULA Collect hire car. Scenic Highlights: Borgarfjörður: Hraunfossar: Borgarnes. Overnight at Hotel Framnes in Grundarfjörður for 2 nights.
DAY 4 SNÆFELLSNES Scenic Highlights: Snæfellsjökull: Arnarstapi. Activity options: Boat tours on Breiðafjörður Bay. (15 May - 15 Sep) Whale spotting tours at Ólafsvík (3.5 hrs, 10 June - 15 September)
DAY 5 THE SNÆFELLSNES PENINSULA AND THE WEST Scenic Highlights: Breiðafjörður Bay: Snæfellsnes’ fishing villages: Búðardalur: Laxárdalsheiði heath. Overnight at Gauksmýri Lodge at Hvammstangi.
DAY 6 AKUREYRI AND WHALE SPOTTING Scenic Highlights: Skagafjörður: Glaumbær Turf Farm/Folk Museum: Akureyri, the capital of the north. Whale spotting tour from Húsavík. Overnight at Vogarfarm by Lake Mývatn for 2 nights.
DAY 7 LAKE MÝVATN AREA Time to explore the extraordinary scenery and wildlife in the area: the wooded headland at Höfði with its lava pillars; contorted black towers of Dimmuborgir; the pastel coloured Námafjall ridge with its steamy surroundings and smouldering, sulphurous Krafla.
DAY 8 MÝVATN-UK Drive to Akureyri, return hire car, domestic flight to Reykjavík, transfer to Keflavík and return scheduled flight to UK.
