Stay at the ICEHOTEL for the most extraordinary night of your life, snowmobile under the stars along the frozen river Torne, dine on reindeer and then cross to Norway’s Tysfjord for some whale spotting. Here, as the herring migrate into the fjord, the Orca follow them for something approaching a grand feast. Follow the over flying gulls and majestic eagles to see these mammals of the deep with their curved dorsal fins hunting in pods like wolves.
DAY 1 UK – JUKKASJARVI Scheduled SAS flight(s) from London to Kiruna via Stockholm. Transfer to the ICEHOTEL. On arrival, check in and lunch at the local Inn, after which collect thermal clothing and take a guided tour of the ICEHOTEL and its environs. Start the evening with a guided snowmobile tour through the forest with (hopefully) the Northern Lights in the sky above. Traditional Sami supper at a wilderness encampment before returning to Jukkasjarvi.
DAY 2 ICEHOTEL Wake up to a hot cloudberry juice, take a sauna (optional) and breakfast across at the Inn. Afterwards, get ready for your reindeer sled safari through the forest and across the fells to a ‘Lavvo’ (tent) for a traditional Sami lunch by an open fire before returning to Jukkasjarvi. In the afternoon, you can choose optional excursions before spending your final night in a cottage. The local Inn serves Sami specialities and has both table d’hôte and à la carte menus.
DAY 3 JUKKASJARVI - TYSFJORD Breakfast at the Inn.Transfer to the rail station for the journey across to the Norwegian coast on the Ofotbanen (the legendry ‘Ore Line’) which snakes around mountains, crosses valleys, climbs up to Riksgränsen the border village before dropping down to the port town of Narvik. Arrive at Narvik and transfer by bus and ferry to Tysfjord, checking in at the Tysfjord Base Camp for 3 nights. Dinner.
DAY 4 WHALE WATCHING Breakfast followed by a short lecture & briefing on Orcas, their taxonomy, evolution and migratory feeding habits before embarking for the Tysfjord. Lunch onboard. Once out in the fjord your guides look for the swirling eagles and flocks of gulls over-flying the herring which signal the presence of Orcas hunting in pods. Dinner at the Base Camp.
DAY 5 ZODIAC RIDE A day for getting ‘up close and personal’ with the Orcas sailing into the fjord on a RIB (rigid inflatable boat) – once in the fjord the skipper turns off the outboard, so the boat drifts close to the whales with the only sounds being those of the water, the overhead gull cries and the Orca’s blow water.
DAY 6 TYSFJORD – UK Breakfast, short self transfer to bus station and by bus to Evenes airport for return flight(s) to Heathrow via Oslo.
